Lewis was struck as she stepped out of her car

DALLAS, TX, (January 14, 2024) – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) says one person was killed and three others injured following an overnight traffic collision in Dallas.

pedestrian collisionJasmine Lewis, a 19-year-old Arlington resident, was fatally struck when she exited her car that became disabled during a crash early Sunday along President George Bush Turnpike.

The incident occurred around 1:15 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of the President George Bush Turnpike near Belt Line Road.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a Honda Accord driven by Jasmine Lewis crashed in the southbound lanes for unknown reasons. Lewis, a 19-year-old Arlington resident, subsequently got out of her disabled Honda, and that is when a 2014 BMW X3 hit her. DPS said the SUV also slammed into Lewis’ Honda.

Tragically, Lewis died from injuries sustained in the wreck, officials said.

A passenger in Lewis’ car and the occupants of the SUV received minor injuries, according to DPS.

Authorities continue to investigate the accident.

Vulnerable road users, like pedestrians, face everyday dangers in this country, and sometimes, as this case highlights, they can be killed on roadways.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2021, there were a total of 3,881 traffic fatalities in Texas, and out of those, 725 were pedestrian fatalities. This represents a 4% increase in pedestrian fatalities from the previous year.

“In most instances, pedestrians possess the right of way when crossing an intersection or a street regardless of if they are in a marked crosswalk,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney, noted that it is imperative to have an independent probe conducted by a seasoned lawyer to help protect the rights of the victim’s family in cases such as this.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” Bond added.

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Jasmine Lewis may be entitled to a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident,” said Formica.

Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide a family through this difficult time while protecting their rights. “Insurance companies often try to pressure victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth,” Formica noted.

“However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for their client to ensure that they are treated with respect and compensated fairly.”
